Why choose a John Hall’s Alaska small vessel exploration?

By partnering with the best, John Hall’s Alaska has designed an exploration that provides the most comprehensive small vessel experience in Southeast Alaska. Guided by naturalists on daily shore activities, a John Hall’s Alaska expert tour representative also joins you.

Exclusive to John Hall’s Alaska guests, this unique experience cannot be found anywhere else. Pair this Southeast Alaska small vessel package with a John Hall’s Alaska land tour and your air from Anchorage is included.

Pair an Inside Passage experience with a land tour

If matching one of these cruises with a land tour we are happy to help you reserve extra hotel stays and exciting optional excursions to fill the time between your land tour and the start of your cruise. For most land tours, the cruise will begin the following day and extra overnights/activities are not required.

Itinerary

Day 1SITKA

Welcome to Sitka – the ceremonial site for the United States’ 1867 purchase of Alaska from Russia. A John Hall’s Alaska representative greets you at the airport for your transfer to your accommodation for the evening. Rest well, you have an exciting week ahead! Enjoy dinner on your own this evening.

Overnight: Aspen Suites Hotel

Day 2SITKA

Sitka is a special place. Enjoy the morning at leisure and later, get a taste of the wild life. Visits to the Fortress of The Bear – an educational rescue center for orphaned bears, and the famous Alaska Raptor Center – a healing and rehabilitation center for injured avian patients, highlight the community’s unique relationship with nature. This afternoon, board the Admiralty Dream and set sail for an evening through Peril Strait.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3CHATHAM STRAIT & EASTERN BARANOF ISLAND

The waters of Chatham Strait are rich with herring, creating a whale-watching spectacle when humpbacks beeline it to feed on them! Spend the morning cruising and whale watching before reaching the eastern shores of Baranof Island. Archaeological evidence has revealed people were living here 10,000 years ago although today, the wilderness rules. Join your naturalists on a guided shore walk, with possible skiff rides and kayaks for further exploration in one of the island’s pristine bays.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4WRANGELL & STIKINE RIVER

Make your way to Wrangell, an area inhabited by the Tlingit people for thousands of years and the only town in Alaska to have been ruled by four nations – the Tlingit, Russia, England, and the United States. Explore the town’s colorful history at the Wrangell Museum. Get set for adventure with an afternoon jet boat tour on the Stikine River, the fastest navigable free-flowing river in North America. Home to a large concentration of bald eagles, watch for them perched in trees and soaring overhead.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5FREDERICK SOUND & TRACY ARM

Set sail for Tracy Arm Fjord – the heart of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness – and the twin Sawyer Glaciers. Cruise the length of this glacially-carved, jade-green fjord, tracing granite cliffs that rise 4,000 feet above sea level. Surrounded by waterfalls, hop in the skiff for an up-close peek at South Sawyer Glacier (conditions permitting). Watch for marine life, harbor seals, Arctic tern, and mountain goats.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6EXPLORATION DAY

First charted in 1794, the waters of the Alexander Archipelago are frequent playgrounds of humpbacks and orcas, and the area’s many nooks and coves make it good for you too – perhaps a chance to kayak, hike, or ride in the skiff. Have your camera at the ready, eyes on the horizon, and see what the day brings! Later today, sail to Orca Point Lodge for an exclusive Alaska-style feast and s’mores on the beach.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7WHALE WATCHING & ICY STRAIT POINT

Today’s treat is searching for whales on a morning cruise and conditions permitting, take to the skiffs for shoreside discoveries, courtesy of Mother Nature. The surrounding waters are rich with bullwhip kelp, sea otters, and whales! Later, explore Icy Strait Point – North America’s only privately owned port held by Alaska Natives. Revel in the mountain views and enjoy a private dinner at Duck Point Smokehouse.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK

Arrive early at one of America’s crown jewel national parks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve – Glacier Bay! Deep in the park view tidewater glaciers, icebergs, and waterfalls. Keep watch high and low, for bears, whales, moose, eagles, and mountain goats. On your way out, sail past South Marble Island – easily spotted by noisy sea lions, Gulls, Guillemots, and puffins frolicking about and perched on this rocky knob. This evening, enjoy the Captain’s Farewell Dinner.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9JUNEAU

After breakfast, bid a final farewell to your crew before disembarking in Juneau. Visit Mendenhall Glacier and Glacier Gardens before transferring to the airport. Guests with afternoon flights have access to the hospitality room in town until their scheduled departure home.
